Welcome to Songwood

Nestled on over 7 acres, Songwood is a little oasis located 75 minutes south of Chicago.

The Legacy of this Land
Songwood sits on what was once known as the Grand Prairie, or black soil prairie, famed for its deep, dark soil and remarkable biodiversity. In its natural state, the black soil prairie was a veritable wildflower garden with hundreds of native species—including sunflowers, coneflowers, goldenrod, milkweed, and tall grasses like big bluestem and Indian grass. Bison, elk, and deer roamed freely, grazing on the lush vegetation and sustaining the ecosystem. However, as the fertility of the soil was discovered, nearly all of Illinois' black soil prairie was converted to industrialized monocultures of corn and soybeans within just 50 years, leaving pristine tallgrass prairie now among the rarest of North America's landscapes.

Our Mission and Commitment
From thoughtful land stewardship to crafting sustainable products, we approach every part of our work with respect for the natural legacy of the land upon which Songwood now sits. Every tree planted, flower grown, and offering created is shaped by our dedication to sustainability, our craft, and to you. We're focused on healing our soil and cultivating a thriving ecosystem for native wildlife and pollinators. Because of that, we only operate seasonally using a few key ingredients: Sunshine + Rainwater + Healthy Soil

That's it. Only the good stuff.

We never grow using synthetic or chemical anything. In fact, we don't utilize pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, insecticides (or any other -icide) on our land at any time.

We promote health by using natural methods like companion planting, crop rotation, and employing beneficial bugs to create a balanced ecosystem. We love ladybugs around here.

We are strictly no-till, which means we disturb our soil as little as possible. Building soil rather than disturbing it allows us to sequester carbon from the atmosphere and store it under our feet, making it available to Songwood's biology as well as keeping it out of the air.

Our land management does not include the use of any heavy gas-guzzling equipment. By working the land with mainly the use of our two sets of hands and feet, we prevent soil compaction, and get our steps in every day.

If for any reason what we grow doesn’t meet our very high quality standards then we compost it and use the opportunity to take a step back, listen to what nature is telling us, learn, and improve for next time.

At Songwood we're always working with nature, and never against it. You can rest assured that what we grow is done with the utmost respect for nature and with the health of the earth, and all of us, in mind at all times.
