Our Journey to Creating Songwood Candles: Pure, Natural, and Sustainable

When we embarked on creating a Songwood candle line, we had a clear goal in mind: to offer a truly natural option, or none at all.

After months of trial and error, extensive testing, and refining every detail—sometimes starting over entirely—we finally crafted a candle that embodies everything we stand for: purity, quality, and trustworthiness.

A Little Background on Candles:

At the heart of every candle are two to four key components:

- Wax
- Wick
- Fragrance (optional)
- Vessel (optional)

Each chandler, or candlemaker (not Chandler Bing—though could that BE any more fun? RIP Matthew Perry!), must make critical choices in their formulation. Unfortunately, many candles on the market today are made with paraffin wax—a byproduct of petroleum, oil shale, or coal. These candles also often contain synthetic fragrances and dyes that emit harmful VOCs, including formaldehyde, petroleum distillates, limonene, alcohol, and esters. These toxins are released right into your home.

We’re Saying No to All That:

At Songwood, we do things differently. We believe in creating candles that are as natural as possible:

- Sustainable Vessels: Our glass vessels are beautiful, recyclable, and reusable.

- 100% Natural Wax: We use ethically sourced beeswax, renewable soy, coconut, and RSPO-certified palm oil. No paraffin, ever.

- Pure Fragrance: All our fragrances are ISO 9235 Certified, meaning they only contain ingredients derived from nature—no synthetic additives, period.

- Natural Wicks: Our wicks are made from untreated, USA-native wood sourced from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) approved mills. No metals, no toxins, just nature.

Safety and Responsibility:

Our candles are:

- Non-toxic: Free from reproductive, acute, and organ toxins.

- Phthalate-free: Free from scent carriers that could affect reproductive health.

- Mutagen-free: No chemicals or agents that could alter your genetic makeup.

- Carcinogen-free: No ingredients known to cause cancer or reproductive harm. As such, our products don’t require Prop 65 labeling.

- Cruelty-free: We never harm animals, ever. 

Sustainable Shipping:

We’re committed to sustainability in everything we do. From the shipping labels to our postcards, everything in our packaging is designed to be reused, composted, or recycled.
